This sublime 2008 muppet video could have made for right now. The debacle that occurs as it spins out of control seems totally of our time. We laughed out loud, charmed by its apt commentary paired with one of the most heartening pieces of music we know.

Then we revisited another glorious ode to Joy: a 2012 flashmob in Catalunya, Spain and remembered the joy of a live performance in a square full of people who had no need to fear each other. We hold those times in our heart as we endure the slow return back…

It got us thinking about how JOY works when life throws in a giant monkey wrench and puts the kibosh on much that we love, and we find ourselves navigating darkness we never imagined, realizing that we’re in control of so very little…

An email from our wise 80-something friend Margot Wellington put things into perspective:

I’ve had to learn that life has both sadness and joy. One has to accept sadness as part of living. And one has to help make joy, learn to recognize joy, and live for the intermittent experience of joy which comes and goes and never stays.

THAT’S what we would like to do to further each day, even when all hell is breaking loose:

help make joy, AND learn to recognize it…

Joy in beauty, joy in quiet, joy in saying hello, joy in helping, joy in singing, joy in laughing, joy in listening, joy in a kindness done, joy in being in this mightily messed up world…
